Just finished watching the race. Shades of Kubica hitting the wall in Montreal in ‘07, thinking I might have just watched a man die or get seriously hurt. I was amazed and thankful to see Fernando crawl out of the car so quickly and without assistance.
An eerily beautiful picture. A somewhat shaken Alonso underneath the wreckage of his car, safe.
And the remains:
I’d argue that drivers should be allowed an extra power unit if they destroy one in a crash like this. Alonso has likely lost this one, effectively putting him one down of the rest of the drivers. Not a good thing based on their reliability last year, which based on testing is still not up to the standards of rest of the field.

Definitely. I’m curious what the G-load was on the start of the flip when the floor dug in and when it landed tail down. The latter especially would have been right on his back and would probably have knocked the wind right out of him.
That said, I suspect that despite the gravel causing the tumble, that the initial grab and landing were actually fairly well spread out loads instead of a high and sharp peak as you’d see when hitting something more solid.

It was like Matrix bullet time, he just cruised by upside down spinning. The cockpit view was crazy. The car was so crunched over there I didn’t even see it, I was looking at the Esteban’s car.

Took me a bit to see the second car as well. I was looking at Guitierez’ car wondering what happened to the back wheel when it switched to the other camera and I see a pile of McLaren against the barrier and guffawed accordingly.

When I saw it in the corner of the screen crumpled up before anyone mentioned that he was involved, I freaked out. I thought I saw another racer die on TV for a moment.
